A peaceful fishing base

Fishing in the picturesque Lockyer Valley offers varied freshwater spots for different experience levels, all within a rural landscape. Murphys Creek Escape makes a convenient base, whether you choose a tent, camper or another accommodation option.

Camp under eucalyptus trees, wake to birdsong and country air, then set out for a day by the water.

Freshwater creeks

1

Freshwater creeks

When waterways are running, Lockyer Creek and tributaries such as Sandy Creek and Laidley Creek can offer freshwater fishing. Species may include Australian bass, silver perch, golden perch (yellowbelly) and Mary River cod.

Dam fishing

2

Dam fishing

Atkinson Dam, Wivenhoe Dam and Somerset Dam are popular day-trip options. Depending on conditions and stocking, anglers may encounter Australian bass, silver perch, golden perch and Mary River cod.

3

Bank, kayak and family fishing

Try bank fishing along accessible parts of Lockyer Creek and its tributaries, or kayak and canoe fishing on calm dam and creek waters. Atkinson and Somerset dams are commonly considered for paddle-based fishing.

Parks, picnic areas and reserves can suit a family fishing day, with some locations offering barbecues, tables and playgrounds. Carp are an introduced pest species and may also be found in Lockyer Creek and some dams.

Fish responsibly and check current conditions

Always check current Queensland fishing regulations, licensing requirements, access rules and any location-specific restrictions before leaving. Consider the environment and use catch-and-release practices where appropriate.

After fishing, return to the campsite for a barbecue, picnic or campfire. You can also enjoy short walks and, when conditions allow, time by the creek. Reserve your stay in advance.
