Here at Murphys Creek Escape, the land gives us a lot. It gives us space to breathe, to unwind, and to reconnect with nature. The towering gums provide shade on scorching days. The creek cools our feet after long hikes and the wildlife reminds us that we’re just visitors in their home.

That’s why we’re evolving the way we manage waste on the property. It’s part of our ongoing commitment to becoming a more sustainable, low-impact retreat.

Because when we look after the land, it keeps looking after us. And that’s the kind of relationship we want to keep building. For now, and for the long run.

Why the change?

You may not know that Murphys Creek Escape doesn’t have a council rubbish collection service. Our access road runs under a low railway bridge, so garbage trucks simply can’t reach us. Until now, we’ve been storing waste in a large trailer and transporting it to Gatton ourselves.

That system isn’t good for the environment. The trailer attracts wildlife (including goannas who rip through coverings like paper), becomes a hotspot for flies and maggots in the heat, and creates unpleasant odours in summer. More importantly, the constant hauling of rubbish adds unnecessary fuel use, emissions and wear and tear, none of which align with our goal of becoming a more eco-friendly, low-impact retreat.

It’s time for a better way that treads more lightly on the land.

What’s changing and how you can help

1. No more general waste bins

We’re moving to a pack-it-in, pack-it-out approach. Just like in national parks, if you bring it with you, please take it home. Leave only footprints, take only memories (and your rubbish).

2. Recycling can stay (for containers only)

We’ll still have designated recycling bins for containers eligible under the container refund scheme. We ask that you take everything else with you.

3. Burn what can be burned (responsibly)

If you’re lighting a fire, use it as an opportunity to reduce waste. Paper, cardboard, and even meat or bread scraps can go in (just make sure it all burns properly). Or you might do a one-off burn before you leave.

Absolutely no plastic, cans, bottles, or anything toxic in the fire.

4. Compost what can be composted

We’re setting up a communal compost system to turn your food scraps into rich soil for our new veggie and fruit garden. We’ll share clear guidelines at camp so you know what’s in and what’s out.

5. Pack smart, leave clean

The easiest way to reduce waste is not to bring it in the first place. Plan meals, cut back on packaging, and think ahead.

6. Respect the rules

If rubbish is dumped, burnt incorrectly, or misused in any way, we’ll ask those campers not to return. We want to keep this a clean, respectful space for everyone.

This isn’t just about rubbish

This change is part of a bigger shift to protect the land, reduce our footprint, and build a more sustainable future at Murphy’s Creek Escape.

Thanks for doing your bit. We can’t wait to welcome you back and see how we can all play a part in keeping this place wild, beautiful, and fair dinkum.
